Businesswoman/-man in e-commerce (m/f/d)

What is it about?

E-commerce clerks work in e-commerce at the interface between purchasing, advertising, logistics, accounting and IT. They help to design the product range, procure goods and services and present the range in online stores, on online marketplaces, in social media or blogs to promote sales. They communicate with customers by e-mail, chat or telephone, for example, and accept inquiries, complaints or delivery requests. They set up payment systems, monitor incoming payments and arrange for the transfer of ordered goods and services. In addition, they plan target group and product-specific online marketing measures, organize the creation and targeted placement of advertising and evaluate the success of advertising. For commercial management and control, they analyze the results of cost and performance accounting and evaluate sales figures and operational processes.

Diverse offer

Winter boots, evening wear, vacuum cleaner filters, plants, food, vacation trips, logistics, health or financial services – there is nothing that cannot be purchased online. E-commerce merchants keep an eye on the constant changes in sales channels, are aware of new developments and implement them for their areas. They manage online stores of manufacturers, retailers or wholesalers, pure online stores (so-called pure players) or present offers on online marketplaces, in blogs, via social media channels or on the sites of large online retailers.

Their tasks are varied, as they can work in many different sectors. At the interface between advertising, purchasing, logistics, IT and accounting, they deal with product range design, procure product data, categorize goods and services, calculate prices and present offers in the respective sales system. They provide payment systems and procedures, process sales and payment transactions and organize the shipment of goods or the provision of services such as booking hotel rooms.

Sales promotion, communication, marketing

In online retail, as in bricks-and-mortar retail, the promotional presentation of goods and services is important. E-commerce merchants therefore pay attention to the user-friendly design of user interfaces and an appealing presentation of offers. Customers should be able to order a product with just a few clicks. Communication with customers is also very important. Online, via chat, e-mail or telephone, e-commerce sales staff conduct consultations, accept feedback, orders or complaints. You will be involved in the development of target and product group-oriented marketing measures to acquire new customers and retain existing customers. In order to use advertising in a targeted manner, e-commerce merchants analyze usage and customer data and select the appropriate online advertising channels. They organize the creation and display of advertising, check the placement and monitor the success of advertising measures.

Commercial management

E-commerce merchants monitor incoming payments, send out payment reminders and calculate sales prices. They draw conclusions for commercial management and control processes from the results of cost and performance accounting and the information from external accounting. They use operational key figures to design the product range, among other things. For example, they use sales figures to define top sellers and offers that are not accepted by the customer and forward their findings to procurement. They carry out customer value analyses and evaluate complaints, cancellations and returns. Based on the analyses, they develop measures to optimize processes and services and to increase customer satisfaction.
